Stonehenge has been quite the mystery over the years as there were simply no clues left regarding why the construction of this thought-provoking monument many years ago was built. The monument includes a circle of large rectangular shaped stones in a large open field in Wiltshire, England. Because there seems to be no apparent reason for why someone would build this type of construction along with the fact that no clues were left behind has made why Stonehenge was made quite the mystery over the years. A second and equally interesting mystery relates to how people were able to move those large stones.
Stonehenge theories
It took about 1,500 years to build Stonehenge, with construction starting around 3,100 B.C. One of the more popular theories that surround Stonehenge include it being a site where a UFO can land, with some people believing this theory to this very day. Another theory states it’s a “unification of Britain”, pertaining to a place where people were working together. A third theory states Stonehenge is a place for healing. A fourth theory offers the suggestion that it was built as a soundscape so people could play their instruments.
Discovering the Mystery
Over the past years archaeologists have discovered that Stonehenge is just one part of other, similar stone monuments. They now believe groups of people lived in the area as animal bones, tools, and burial sites have all been found. Other than this information and the theories above the true reason for building Stonehenge still remains a mystery.
The mystery relating to how people were able to maneuver the large stones in order to create Stonehenge is now believed to have been solved. Archaeologists have recently found a number of tools, ramps, platforms and more on an old road that they believe was once a quarry exit, which solves this mystery because they weren’t sure where the large stones came from. Tests were indeed able to prove that the stones did indeed come from the quarry area. Although it took a lot of work groups of people working together were able to maneuver the stones using ropes and sledges, slowly but surely maneuvering the stones toward their final destination.
Stonehenge – A Must See!
People come from all over the world to see these ancient stones firsthand. The stones of Stonehenge are quite unique and are considered a must-see in-person in order to truly appreciate their construction. The tallest stone is about 30 feet tall and weighs about 25 tons, which helps to put things in perspective.
