Exploring the Rooms at Versailles

Exploring the Rooms at Versailles

The building of the Palace of Versailles began in 1631 and is listed as a World Heritage Site. Once home to French Kings and Queens, the Palace is the perfect symbolization of Old Europe royal elegance. The French held onto their royal power until revolutionaries took over the Palace in 1789, forcing King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette out. The Palace is absolutely breathtaking, making it a must-see when visiting France.

Exploring the Rooms at Versailles

There are 2300 rooms to explore when visiting Versailles, allowing visitors the ability to walk where royalty once walked.

  • Hall of Mirrors. Also known as the Grand Galerie, this well-known room was built to replace a terrace that led to the Palaces gardens. The reason why this room is so famous is because it’s where the signing of the Treaty of Versailles took place in 1919, the beginning of the end of World War 1. The Hall of Mirrors is still used to this day by Presidents of the Republic when welcoming official guests.

  • Gallery of Great Battles. The Gallery of Great Battles is the largest room at Versailles and takes up almost all of the room available on the first floor of the South Wing. The design of the Gallery began in 1833 and includes almost 15 centuries of paintings depicting successes of the French military.

  • War Room. The building of the War Room began in 1678. The purpose of the room was to acknowledge the military victories that made the peace treaties of Nijmegen possible.

  • Peace Room. The Peace Room is similar to the War Room yet is decorated using themes based on the advantages of peace that came to Europe via France.

  • The Royal Opera House. The Royal Opera House was initiated in 1770 under Louis XV’s rule as he wanted a concert hall in Versailles that included a luxury décor worthy of existing in the Palace.

  • The Royal Chapel. The Royal Chapel room was the fifth and last chapel to be built and was completed in 1710. The gothic style architecture is very impressive and includes large glass windows and vaulted ceilings.

  • The King’s Chamber. The King’s Chamber, aka the King’s Bedchamber, is located in the Kings Apartments. Touted as the most symbolic room, this room was used several times a day – waking up ceremonies, going to sleep ceremonies, private dining and occasional entertaining.

  • The Queen’s Chamber. The Queen’s Chamber, aka the Queen’s Bedchamber, is located in the Queen’s Apartments. The Queen spent most of her time in this Palace room, which is where future princes and princesses were born.
