The name Antoni Gaudi is well-known throughout Europe. Born in 1852, Gaudi was a famous architect who focused more on the modern aspect of architecture, which was a different view than most architects were taking at this time in history. Gaudi spent a lot of his time practicing what is called Catalan Modernism architecture, which is a particular style of architecture that puts a big focus on nature, with a deeper emphasis on the many and different kinds of natural shapes found in the natural world we live in.

The following is a list of some of Gaudi’s more popular architectural works that can be found in Barcelona:

• Casa Batllo – Also known as the Dragon House or the House of Bones, this is Gaudi’s most recognizable architectural work. Gaudi designed this house in the 1870’s, redesigning it in the early 1900’s.
• Park Guell – At nearly 50 acres, this park was built in the early 1900’s and includes two major sections for the public to enjoy. Gingerbread-style houses and a mosaic salamander are just 2 of the many architectural-style wonders to be seen here!
• Casa Mila – Also known as La Pedrera or the Rock Quarry, this architectural design doesn’t include any straight lines. It’s currently being used as a cultural center, which includes a museum dedicated to Gaudi’s architectural works.
• Sagrada Familia – One of Gaudi’s most famous pieces of work, he started the construction on this Roman Catholic Church in the early 1900’s. He unfortunately died before he was able to complete this project.

An Architectural Genius

Gaudi was a genius architect who had quite the distinctive design style. Although his awe inspiring architectural designs never quite fit into any one particular stylistic movement, he never adapted to anyone else’s idea of architecture. He was fascinated by nature and studied at the Barcelona higher school of architecture where he developed his fantastical style, influencing the 19-century architecture movement like nobody else could.

Sadly, Antoni Gaudi died in 1926 from injuries obtained in a tram accident.
