Both new and seasoned wine lovers enjoy exploring the vineyards in Napa Valley. There are more than 400 wineries located here, of which the high majority are family owned. There is also more than 100 different types of accommodations available in this popular wine region, including resorts, country inns and bed and breakfasts. Because the Napa Valley area offers some of the most spectacular views in all the world, those who choose to visit are encouraged to take a ride on the Napa Valley Wine Train.

Riding on the Napa Valley Wine Train

The Napa Valley Wine Train offers riders a truly luxurious vintage experience. The train was built completely out of steel in 1915, and was considered to be a huge technological achievement due to features like electrical lighting, arched windows and steam heat. Today, the Napa Valley Wine Train allows riders views of more than 100 different wineries and vineyards, all while relaxing in one of the many restored historic railcars. The tour begins in downtown Napa and ends in St Helena, when the train turns around and heads back to Napa. The Napa Valley Wine Train tour takes 3 hours to complete the 36-mile roundtrip journey.

The Railcars

In 1987, the railcars were restored for the purpose of creating a Wine Train for Napa Valley. Additional restorations were added to bring it up to today’s luxury standards, including mahogany paneling, brass accents, partitions that include etched glass and armchairs covered in rich velveteen fabrics.

The Cuisine

The cuisine offered on the journey is made to order by experienced chefs. Holding true to Napa style, all gourmet meals are served in multiple courses. Examples of meals include yellow fin tuna tartare, pan-seared Pacific halibut and roasted tenderloin of beef. Fresh local produce is always a focus.

The Wine

Most of the wines offered on the Wine Train are carefully selected from wineries in Napa Valley. A few of the wine selections come from other regions of California, making for a total of about 40 different types of wines grown in California available. While riders are encouraged to try out some of these exceptional wines, they are free to bring their own special bottle of wine onboard.
