Wondering what happens to the old Las Vegas neon signs when new neon signs are made? The Las Vegas Neon Museum was created nearly 25 years ago as a way to preserve these iconic signs. This unique museum is dedicated to collecting, preserving, studying and exhibiting iconic Las Vegas signs, mainly for educational purposes. There are a variety of special exhibits the museum offers throughout the year, with one of the newest exhibits focusing on neon signs from years ago and how they looked in their heyday when they were lighting up the streets of Las Vegas.
Then and Now: The Las Vegas Neon Boneyard Exhibit
The Neon Boneyard exhibit is currently available to view at the Nevada Humanities Program Gallery. The exhibit is running from June 6 until July 24 and is free to the general public. The focus of this exhibit is to allow people to see the neon signs in the boneyard and then can compare the signs to the vintage images of where they used to be back in Vegas’ early days. The visual experience this exhibit offers is truly like no other.
Visitors will enjoy learning about the impact that these neon vintage signs made back in the day, allowing for a truly innovative look at the past history of how Vegas used neon signs as a way to establish its upcoming expansion. They’ll also learn how the signs were designed and where they came from, as well as how neon signs in Vegas have evolved over the years.
This final resting place of Vegas neon signs is one that any age will enjoy, especially those who remember the early days of Las Vegas. While visiting during the daytime will allow for close up looks of the signs, visiting during the nighttime is a must as all of the neon signs are lit up. A short list of some of the more famous signs include the Golden Nugget sign, the Silver Slipper sign, the Binions’s Horseshoe, the original lamp from the first Aladdin Casino built and the Sahara neon sign.
