Currently looking for a few beneficial traveling resources because you have a child who has special needs? Good idea. Having a child who has special needs requires special resources. Whether a child’s needs are related to their general health, developmental health and/or their mental health, special accommodations are often necessary when traveling. In order to make it easier for parents to travel with their special needs child, travel resources are available.

A national survey was performed on children’s health and found that nearly 15 million children in the United States alone have special care health needs.

Children Who Have Special Needs

When children with special needs are traveling, it is essential for parents to always be aware of any additional or special requirements the child will need when traveling. This includes letting everyone know that a child with special needs will be a part of a traveling or family group, i.e. travel agent, ticket agent, flight attendant. While it can indeed be difficult to travel with children who have special needs, there are travel resources available that can make traveling an easier process.

The following is a list of some of the more commonly used organizations and resources parents can turn to when they have one or more children who have special needs.

• The M.O.R.G.A.N. Project aka Making Opportunities Reality Granting Assistance Nationwide. This group assists family’s with any travel expenses they need for medical treatments.
• ASD Vacations is a travel agency that focuses on providing travel services with families who have children with special needs
• Screening and Security. Airports offer information on their websites regarding their screening and security processes, which is beneficial for understanding they are in place standards for wheelchairs, medical devices, liquid medicines, more.
• Kids as Self Advocates. A website that offers children with disabilities traveling tips.
• DisabledTravelers.com. A website that specializes in everything there is to know about traveling with a disability.
• Autistic Globetrotting. A website that focuses on traveling were children who have autism.
• The American Lung Association offers a checklist for children who are traveling and have asthma.
• Seattle’s Children offers a checklist for children who are traveling and have diabetes.
• New Directions offers travel opportunities for teenagers who have developmental disabilities, i.e. cerebral palsy, autism, down syndrome.
• Special Needs Travel Mom is a website that offers numerous tips and tricks for parents struggling with a special needs child.
