Visiting Paris requires travelers to make detailed plans, as there are many things to see and do when in Paris. Also known as the ‘City of Love’ and the ‘City of Lights’, many travelers who visit Paris do so because it’s known as the most romantic city in the world. Since day trips from Paris are quite popular, many travelers are choosing to visit Normandy’s Famous Beaches.
Normandy
A day trip to Normandy from Paris takes 2 hours by train, making it a perfect day trip. The fact that there are many sites to see and interesting things to do in Normandy, many travelers choose to stay 1 or 2 nights. Some of the more popular things to see and do in Normandy includes visiting its picturesque villages, discovering regions that served inspiration to artists like Claude Monet, exploring Mont Saint Michel, and enjoying learning about its famous Normandy Beaches.
Visiting Normandy’s Beaches
Visiting Normandy’s Beaches allows travelers to learn more about the 5 Beaches of D-Day. It was on June 6, 1944, when this largest seaboard invasion took place, which included more than 6000 ships and boats. Once soldiers arrived at the beaches in Northern Normandy, they stormed onto French soil.
Sword Beach. Sword Beach is where the 3rd British Infantry Division landed, whose goal was to offset the amount of German soldiers that were attacking from both sides of the beach. The invasion was considered to be successful, as once the German soldiers lost upwards of 50 tanks, they deserted their positions.
Juno Beach. Juno Beach is a location where many Canadian soldiers were killed by German bullets, as German soldiers were already in their defensive positions. While the first few hours of invasion were a detrimental loss, by the end of the day Canadian soldiers were able to take control of Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer. More soldiers arrived the next day, allowing for a progressive move into Normandy.
Gold Beach. Gold Beach is where nearly 25,000 English soldiers landed, who experience no major problems working their way to Normandy’s inland. The reason no problems were experienced when invading this beach is because the Germans considered this beach to be an improbable landing area. Three days later the soldiers overtook the town of Bayeux.
Omaha Beach. Omaha Beach is where nearly 2500 United States soldiers wounded missing, wounded or dead. This beach location is where the cemetery lies, making it one of the more popular beaches visited. The cemetery is dedicated to all of the United States troops that died during the landing at Normandy. The cliffs where the Germans defended themselves against the invasion is also located at this Beach.
Utah Beach. Utah Beach is the second beach that United States soldiers landed on, which was a last minute addition. While nearly 20,000 soldiers invaded this beach, it was estimated that less than 300 soldiers were wounded or killed. While this beach invasion started with confusion, it ended up being a successful invasion.
