In 2016, the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. The term ‘Brexit’ was quickly applied to the situation, a combination of the words Britain and Exit. The decision for the United Kingdom to break away from the European Union was a voluntary movement, and was done in the hopes of giving the country its own fresh and directional path away from the Union.

Pro Brexit

Those who support the exit of the United Kingdom believe that the decision was necessary in order to bring back the country’s original identity. They want to reserve its culture as well as its uniqueness, which many felt was being lost due to immigration. The pro Brexit group for the most part includes people who are considered to be low income and/or have little or no education.

Those who are against the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union believe that it was in the best interest of the United Kingdom to remain because they are a large and important part of the British economy.

Brexit Importance, Impact

The fact that Britain made up nearly 20% of the European Union’s economy made quite the impact when the United Kingdom voted to leave. Soon after the British pound decreased by more than 10%, hitting a low they haven’t experienced in decades. Today, there’s a focus on making the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union one that can be constructive, of which both agree is in the best interest of all involved.

Brexit and Travel

The Association of British Travel Agents states that while in the beginning spending power was affected, the remaining member states will still have up to two whole years to offer the United Kingdom an arrangement that will support future trading relationships. Airlines were against Brexit due to the lowering costs of flights between the two countries, which were created by the new regulations that increased flight competition, American travelers going to the United Kingdom were happy to know their dollars were worth a lot more after the vote to leave.
