The U.S. Virgin Islands are a group of islands in the Caribbean that are known for their beautiful white sandy beaches and turquoise waters, as well as the stunning coral reef. If you are heading to the Virgin Islands for some fun in the sun or you just want to put your toes in the sand, the most popular vacation islands are St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. Choose from one of these islands and you’ll have plenty of great things to see and do. Here are just a few options:
Known for its beaches and especially for snorkeling, there are also other great spots to visit on St. Thomas, including Blackbeard’s Castle The Castle is five acres known as “The Williamsburg of the Caribbean”, where you can take a dip in one of their pools or also visit Skytsborg Tower that provides a fantastic view of the harbor.
There are sites that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places – the Villa Notman, Haagensen House and Hotel 1829 – where you can see the world’s largest collection of life-sized pirate sculptures.
Visitors can also enjoy St. Thomas’s Magens Bay Park, 68 acres of white sandy beach, which also has a six-acre arboretum, camping sites, coconut groves and mangroves and wetlands.
On St. John’s, you can enjoy some rest and relaxation on one of the most popular beaches on the island, Maho Beach, located on the Dutch side of the Caribbean island. There’s also Annaberg Plantation, 518 acres that include 25 active sugar producing factories on St. John that has been around since 1780, when slavery was in motion. Once slavery was abolished, the acres were divided up.
If you prefer to be on your feet, walking around and exploring, there’s Leinster Bay, which makes for a perfect hand-in-hand walk with your loved one. Down the road is Waterlemon Cay, where tourists can snorkel or walk along the coast.
In St. Croix, there’s Fort Frederik, the large rust-colored building to ward off pirates (there’s also an art gallery and museum inside). It was built in 1760 and is a National Historic Landmark. Slave emancipation took place here on July 3, 1848.
You can’t go to St. Croix without trying some delicious rum. The Croix Rum Festival “Flavor of Rum” is an annual event to promote St. Croix’s historical culture of spirits, food, music and arts. In 2016 it took place in May, so check the dates for next year’s adventures.
