Thinking about booking your next trip to Washington, DC? the largest military cemetery in the United States? Located in Washington, DC, there are more than 400,000 military veterans buried here, as well as some immediate family numbers. Because the majority of people who are laid here in their final resting place have given their lives in the name of freedom, the cemetery is open every single day of the year so people can come in and pay their respects.
Up to 30 funerals still take place at ANC every week.
Who’s Buried at Arlington National Cemetery
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a must see when visiting the cemetery, which is there as an acknowledgement to all of the unidentified soldiers who fought for the freedoms of the American people. The following is a list of some of the more well-known people buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Major Walter Reed, U.S. Army – Pioneer bacteriologist
Jane Delano, U.S. Army – Pioneer in Army Nurse Corps before and during World War I. Headed the Red Cross.
Juliet Opie Hopkins – A Confederate nurse known as the ‘Florence Nightingale of the South.
Brig. Gen. Hazel Johnson-Brown, U.S. Army – 1st African American female to attain a general officer rank in American military history
Adm. Richard Byrd – Arctic explorer, first man to fly over both poles, awarded Medal of Honor
John Wesley Powell – First person to explore the Grand Canyon
Finn Ronne – Polar explorer, discovered the Ronne Ice Shelf
