Imagine diving under the waters to check out the remains of long lost vessels. If this sounds fascinating to you, then head down to Bermuda where wreck diving is very popular. Here are just some of the wrecks you can see:
The Mary Celestia: You might have heard about this shipwreck already. The story around it has grown with time. It originally sunk in 1864 due to a pilot who said “I know every rock here as well as I know my own house” and then lasted 8 minutes before hitting a reef and sinking the ship. Fortunately, there was only one casualty. The Confederate blockade runner was filled with supplies for the South. In 2011, a storm blasted some sand off of the boat which reveal sealed bottles of wine and perfume. The wine has been written about in Food & Wine magazine and the perfume bottles are on sale.
Constellation and Montana: If you have seen the movie or read the novel The Deep by Peter Benchley, then you might have noticed that these two shipwrecks were the inspiration behind it. They were both sunk within 50 feet of each other. The Montana, much like Celestia, was a Confederate blockade runner. The Constellation was an American schooner that was carrying supplies, ranging from cement and crucifixes to Scotch; 700 cases of it, actually. Divers heading down to see one wreck will easily be able to see the other one as well due to their close proximity.
Hermes: Built in 1943, this ship was designed to be a buoy tender for the US Navy. Since its sinking, it has become a popular spot for divers to photograph. The hatches have been removed from the side so divers can swim inside safely. You can explore the crew compartments, engine room, and cargo hold while diving. If that is not enough for your picture needs, the reef surrounding the wreck often has schools of fish swimming through.
Two Tugs: The Two Tugs is a nickname for another pair of shipwrecks — the King and the Forceful. The King sunk in 1984, and unfortunately cannot be entered to explore due to the damage received by storms. You can, however, view Bermuda’s first artificial reef by peeking through the holes in the side of the ship. The Forceful was a ship that was purposely sunk. It was an ex-tugboat from the Royal Navy Dockyard. Divers can explore through the engine room and underneath the propeller.
